The Avocado Show in Amsterdam: Is it Worth the Hype?

Avocados are the new global food hype, or they have been for the last few years at least. Millennials certainly have the reputation of being obsessed with this creamy pitted fruit. So, when avocado-only restaurant The Avocado Show in Amsterdam opened to the public in 2017, the resulting long lines and social media hysteria did not come as a surprise.

As a self-proclaimed avocado addict, whose passion for the fruit began long before avocado toast was even a thing, I had to see for myself if The Avocado Show was worth the hype.

After waiting in line for about 25-minutes, my friend and I found a seat at a communal table with other avocado aficionados. The sleek and modern interior was packed full of these wooden-topped tables and not much else. It was busy and loud, but sitting so close to complete strangers and having avocado food envy over the dishes that kept appearing around us definitely broke the ice. Our table mates were visiting from England and they were happy to hear some of my off the beaten track suggestions of things to do in Amsterdam.

Testing the Avocado Super Salad

My friend and I opted for the Avocado Super Salad first. This was a scrumptious mix of lentils, feta cheese, seeds and nuts, and included a generous helping of avocado of course. We then decided to try the Avocado Show’s Insta-worthy take on the classic avocado toast: The Avocado Rose. This dashing dish was a crusty slice of sourdough bread spread with a creamy hummus and topped with avocado shaped into a beautiful rose.

I also had the Smooth Operator Smoothie, which was a delicious blend of banana, avocado and cinnamon. It made for the perfect accompaniment to our other avocado dishes. As you can probably guess by now, every dish on the menu centred on this humble yet flavourful fruit.

Is The Avocado Show in Amsterdam Worth the Hype?

So, did The Avocado Show live up to the hype? Well, the food was a bit pricy (no surprises there). It was also slightly ridiculous being in a restaurant where everyone took photos of their food and uploaded them before even tasting the dish. Still, everything was mouth-wateringly fresh and a delight to eat. If your avocado obsession is as strong as mine, then head to The Avocado Show for a tasty treat. It will definitely be worth it.

Does the sight of this green fruit not quite set your heart aflutter? Then stick to one of the other restaurants nearby. De Pijp is full of great eateries and some of them don’t even have avocados on the menu – the horror!
